The great women drummers of Born to Drum return from summer camp in this faculty concert and post-camp party where everyone is encouraged to bring a drum and join in. “The Party Continuette!” Far from a misspelling, Born to Drum founder Carolyn Brandy explains, “We have a wonderful 90-year-old friend, Mami Nina, who is the mother of Nydia Mata from Cuba. Mami used to always say, ‘The party continuette’ about camp and that is how we got that phrase.”
Tonight’s concert covers a wide range of traditional African, North and South American drum styles. In addition to Brandy, faculty members performing tonight (many participated in our Women’s History Month “Mama Africa” concert in March) are Mabiba Baegne from the Congo, Ouida Lewis from Jamaica, Adwoa Kudoto and Sena Kugbega, both from Ghana, plus Susana Pedroso from Cuba, drum circle facilitator Jeni Swerdlow, and djembe drum master Mar Stevens. Denise Solis and Julia Cepeda from the Taller Bombalele group will present the Puerto Rican Bomba. Julia Cepeda is a member of the famous Cepeda family from Puerto Rico who have preserved the Bomba genre of music for centuries. She was also on the Mama Africa concert with Sistas of the Drum. “The Party Continuette!"
