Bumper Jacksons
Hailing from Washington, D.C., the Bumper Jacksons are an award-winning dance band with acoustic roots. According to “Baltimore” magazine, “The band fuses jazz, blues, and country swing into a hootin’, hollerin’ party, full of brass, strings, and backwoods instruments like washboard and kazoo. Their New Orleans-by-way-of-Appalachia sound is stronger than ever… stacking flirty ragtime; mountain ditties; and smoky, Southern soul into a rich revival soundtrack, perfect for a back-porch boogie on a hot June night.”
The mostly acoustic sextet mixes some deeply rooted regional tunes with originals by clarinetist Jess Eliot Myhre (she’s also the lead vocalist) and guitarist and banjo player Chris Ousley. They launched the band as a vehicle for their songwriting in 2012 and quickly attracted an East Coast following, winning an array of honors including the Mid-Atlantic region’s 2015 “Artist of the Year” and “Best Folk Band” from 2013 to 2015 at the Washington Area Music Awards, 2015-16 Strathmore Music Hall Artists in Residence, recipients of the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation Touring Grant, and two-time winners of the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest.
Along with Myhre and Ousley, the Bumper Jacksons are pedal steel guitarist Dave Hadley, bassist-singer Alex Lacquement, drummer Dan Samuels, and trombonist Brian Priebe. They honed their chops into the dark jazz clubs of New Orleans as well as their favorite old-time fiddlers’ conventions throughout the southern Appalachian Mountains. The success of the band’s last two albums – “Too Big World” (2015) and “Sweet Mama, Sweet Daddy Come In” (2014) – demonstrate the ongoing refinement of their rich and rustic sound.
