Hayward reggae band the Servants tonight celebrates the release of its debut album, “Time.” Featuring such socially aware original songs as “Plastic Smiles” and “Burning City,” the group pays attention to the roots of Jamaican conscious music that its members cherish and preserve, adding original touches to deep groove reggae sounds. Group founder Viliami Mahe has arranged and composed since the band formed in 1997. His interpretation of conscious roots reggae is unique and unconventional, yet could not have been possible without a patient, strong core of interchangeable talent willing to conform to a new sound. The members – David 'Dok' Ioramo, Al 'Birdie' Ortegon, Romano 'Mano' Kolo, Kauala 'Walla' Hokafonu and Henry Catalan – have played major local clubs and festivals and have shared stages with greats from Lucky Dube to Midnite.
Drummer, freestyle vocalist and bandleader RazorBlade tonight joins Wiley’s Coyotes in a set of his conscious contemporary reggae. While growing up in Westmoreland, Jamaica, RazorBlade and other youngsters would get together and play music. Even though few could afford real instruments, they were determined to create sound with anything they could get their hands on: cardboard boxes, empty bottles, tin cans. He later immigrated to the United States and found that drums captured his heart. He says of the experience, “the drums actually chose me.” Since then, he has played with Andrew Tosh, Mad Cobra, Paul Elliott, the Harmonics, and Our Boys Steel Band, and his own group the Blade Band. RazorBlade’s vocal talent emerged when a group he was playing with heard him chanting to himself during a break in a rehearsal session and handed him the microphone. The procession of words and rhythm that now pierce the rooms at his shows quickly became a regular part of nights at venues such as the Bamboo Hut in San Francisco, the Catalyst in Santa Cruz, and Ashkenaz.
