We journey to the lands of the Slavs as the polyphonic harmonies of the Zele Choir bring us music from Bulgaria, Croatia, Ukraine, Russia, and beyond! Music by Zele, stories by Tim Ereneta, Neshama Franklin, and Dana Sherry.
Zele
Initiated as the first Kitka-run ongoing community ensemble experience, Zele is now entering its 18th season led by Kitka singer Janet Kutulas. The group is comprised of 20+ women of all ages. Learning traditional folksongs and choral arrangements from the Balkans and the Caucasus, the group stops along the way to hone ensemble skills and study regional vocal placement, stylistic subtleties, language, and to enjoy the incredible harmonies of both the music and the good fellowship of the group.
Tim Ereneta
Storyteller Tim Ereneta of Berkeley, California, enjoys sharing classic and forgotten fairy tales, with audiences of all ages—but especially adults. The tales he shares may be centuries old, but their themes of miracles and treachery are still relevant in today's world. Tim has told stories on stages from Washington, DC, to Chennai, India, and in theaters, art museums, churches, and nightclubs and around campfires. A playwright and actor, Tim brings 30 years of theatrical experience to his performances.
Neshama Franklin
Neshama's been telling ever since she learned to talk. Started professionally with folktales at the library where she still works, got into personal stories at the Moth, and considers all stories "true" no matter where they come from. Check her out on YouTube. She also has a biweekly radio program on KWMR and a weekly blog of book reviews at Marin County Library.
Dana Sherry
Dana Sherry was once a respectable historian of Russia, until she turned to a life of storytelling. She specializes in traditional tales from the heart of the Silk Road, and is the artistic director of the Caravan of Stories, a monthly storytelling series in Berkeley dedicated to the folktales of Central Asia and the Caucasus. She has toured in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, and she has performed at festivals, conferences, theaters, schools, and libraries in Northern California, Seattle, and Washington DC.
