STINKY TALES blends the gentle approachability of “Mr. Rogers” (minus the cardigan) with the musical playfulness of “Sesame Street” (instead of ABCs, the emphasis is on learning how to handle our screw-ups), and the practical advice of “Dear Abby” (with real world wisdom provided by kids). Each episode involves a common, thorny emotion (such as jealousy, feeling left out, or anger at not getting what you want) and addresses it in an entertaining way that uses dialogue and laughter to encourage understanding.
In our increasingly fractious society, the skills that STINKY TALES promotes are needed now more than ever. The show’s issues and storylines are derived from decades of experience in the classroom, on the school yard, at the dinner table, and on the performance stage. Rather than rely on simplistic moralizing, the conflicts are framed in ways that encourage young viewers to participate in the resolution. By entering the realm of the imagination with a cast of engaging and relatable characters, STINKY TALES creates a safe place for children to recognize real social-emotional difficulties, and to learn how to constructively face them in their own, larger worlds.
