From Texas and southwest Louisiana, bluesman Johnny Nicholas was a front man in Asleep At the Wheel for two years, played guitar in Cajun legend Nathan Abshire’s last band, and has toured with blues legends like Howling’ Wolf, Roosevelt Sykes and Big Walter Horton. He is a soulful singer and an impassioned player on a multitude of instruments including guitar, piano and harmonica. Johnny connected with Berkeley’s Suzy Thompson when they were both part of Geoff Muldaur’s Texas Sheiks project, which brought together Austin’s best Americana musicians to support guitarist Stephen Bruton. Suzy’s since performed with Johnny at Black Pot Festival (Louisiana) and Rhythm & Roots (Rhode Island). Eric and Suzy Thompson are long-time Bay Area roots music heroes, in many bands including the California Cajun Orchestra. Eric’s Bay Area music roots go way back to the early 1960s when he played bluegrass with Jerry Garcia, and his teenage guitar wizardry can be heard on the recently released “Before the Dead” box set.
