Ashkenaz’s Executive Director and her family are off to new adventures and fresh Dairy Air in Wisconsin, and would love to see you before leaving on the 24th!
All proceeds will go to Ashkenaz.
The night will feature The Crooked Stuff (Electro-Funk) and The Broun Felinis (Acid Jazz)!
Electro vibes, thumping and a bit of the dark side… The Crooked Stuff is a cross-pollinated hybrid of electronic rock, heavy soul and sub bumping beats. With doses of influential DNA from The Doors, Devo, Daft Punk, The Headhunters, Prodigy, Talking Heads and an array of other psychedelic synth punk experiences—the band’s music was born at a twisted intersection between the modern electronic and deep analog worlds.
Having shared the stage with Tank & The Bangas, Fishbone, The Nth Power, Lyrics Born, Dumpstaphunk, Monophonics, Turn Me On Dead Man and Papa Mali… the San Francisco keys + bass + beats + vox 4-piece is honed, fully operational and on the rise into deeper space.
The most important thing about music is the way it makes you feel. Musicians are lucky enough to live a life of pure feeling if they can play their personal visionary music with as much integrity and energy as the spirit grants them. For the last 25 years, the trio called BROUN FELLINIS have been doing exactly this. They innovate and disseminate their "Brounsoun", a sonic expression inspired by the ancient to future traditions of Jazz, Rock, Funk, Hardcore, Afrocentric Hip hop, Dub, film music and African/Indian trance sounds.
The Fellinis play this NOW music with passion, precision and soul in energetic performances that embrace freedom and structure equally. Out of nowhere, improvised themes and motifs morph into well crafted songs with evocative melodies, exotic harmonies and infectious rhythms.
It is a music of the moment reflecting the lives of three exceptional musicians living and creating in the Bay Area, California. “the Broun Fellinis glide easily and often from frenzied excursions to plaintive exotic melodies to hypnotic grooves.” Downbeat Magazine
The trio has toured with Ben Harper and shared the stage with George Clinton, Gil Scott-Heron, the Roots, Meshell Ndegeocello, Rafael Saadiq, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Galactic, Bad Brains, Ravi Coltrane, Les Claypool, The Last Poets, Living Colour, Zakir Hussain, Bernie Worrell, Jimmy Smith, Medeski, Martin, Wood, the Yellowjackets, and many more.
Other notable performances include the San Sebastian International Jazz Festival in Spain, the opening of the Yerba Buena Center For The Arts in San Francisco, and on the San Francisco Virgin Megastore’s roof for their grand opening that featured the Broun Fellinis and Cyndi Lauper. Top venues like the Independent, Yoshi's, and House Of Blues have hosted the group as well as the Stern Grove and Du Maurier festivals. They’ve been profiled by Downbeat, Spin, Billboard, NPR, KCRW, Radio Nova in France, and more.
On June 25, 2016 Broun Fellinis will celebrate their 25th anniversary with a performance at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. 2016 will also see twenty five releases culled from new recordings and the vault.
