Skip the Needle
Skip the Needle: Born from group of friends jamming: all veterans of multiple bands, tours, recording.
The band is the collective effort of four Bay area bandleaders, each lead singer, multi-instrumentalist, performer and songwriter. Lead singing duties rotate among the members while the others add background vocals. The songs are collectively written to showcase each member’s unique contributions, bringing together rock, funk, soul and fusion in an amalgam that rocks hard and is also musically diverse and complex; carries a strong, socially conscious message but wants everybody to party while hearing it. If Jimi Hendrix, Chrissie Hynde and Chaka Kahn cloned a baby, this band would be the result. Skip the Needle is reckless, eclectic, fearless and fun, dedicated to love and like nothing you've ever heard before.

Shelley Doty X-tet
"I play rock with a jazz attitude," Shelley Doty said in an interview in the San Francisco Chronicle. "When I write a song, I think of it as its own universe. I give my musicians a recording of the melody, then tell them to come up with their own interpretation." Those musicians, the members of her X-tet, keep changing. "X is a variable," she told the East Bay Express. "That’s the one thing I learned in high school algebra that stuck with me.” This show will feature Angeline Saris on Bass and Denise Martin on Drums. don't be surprised if there are a few special guests. Whoever joins her on stage, Shelley will deliver the goods on electric and acoustic guitar, with "energy, funk, and surprise," in the words of Guitar Player Magazine, which also praised her "smoky, soulful voice."
Growing up in Berkeley, Shelley listened mostly to jazz, Coltrane and Miles, and didn't imagine herself as a musician until her brothers turned her on to rock and roll. Nancy Wilson of Heart was her inspiration, at age 14, for picking up a guitar. She co-founded the popular West Coast band Jambay, and has toured or performed with Yo Miles!, Bonfire Madigan, Pyeng Threadgill, gina Breedlove,Cris Williamson, and Sistas in the Pit. These days she focuses her time on band of bad-asses Skip The Needle and the Shelley Doty X-tet. X marks the spot March 1st at Ashkenaz, the crossroads of jazz, rock, folk, and blues, where fans of catchy originals performed with passion and commitment will want to see the Shelley Doty X-tet do their thing.
