In honor of International Women’s Day, Nava Dance presents an incredible line up of local artists coming together to celebrate and recognize the powerful and creative voices of women across cultures and time. The event is a benefit for MADRE - a global organization building peaceful, resilient communities by uplifting women worldwide. All proceeds from this benefit concert go directly to MADRE’s grassroots program providing humanitarian aid to Syrian women refugees. MADRE partners and projects span the globe: Nicaragua, Guatemala, Haiti, Colombia, Kenya, Palestine, Syria and Iraq.

NAIMA SHALHOUB is a Lebanese American artist who uses music as a tool for transformation, liberation, education and self-expression. Her dimensional work as a vocalist, composer, performing artist, and educator focuses on the expansive quality of the voice and its power for redemption and social justice. In addition to appearing regularly with her band, Naima has worked as a Restorative Justice Coordinator for youth in the Oakland public school system, facilitated weekly “Music and Freedom” sessions with incarcerated women at the San Francisco County Jail, and is currently teaching Voice and Music to middle schoolers at a public charter school in Richmond, CA.
MIRIAM PERETZ & NAVA DANCE COLLECTIVE Miriam Peretz is an internationally celebrated dance instructor and performer. Over the past twenty years her signature dance style has spread across continents through her international dance collective Nava, and through the intensive training she offers worldwide. Miriam’s format draws heavily on sacred dances from around the world, Central Asian dance, devotional Sufi whirling and ritual. Her movement quality and aesthetics also incorporate her years of martial arts training, contemporary dance, Flamenco, and many other world dance forms. Miriam is joined by her Nava Dance Collective, an international women’s collective of dancers devoted to creating meaningful artistic collaborations in the realm of traditional, ethno-contemporary, sacred and ritual dance art.
JENAY SHINOBIJAXX ANOLIN is an artist, educator, trainer and performer born and raised in the awesome city of Oakland, California. As a Registered Dietetic Technician, a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Jenay is also a nutrition educator, mentor and advocate for health and wellness in her community. Jenay is trained in Classical Ballet, but also cultured in Hip Hop, House, Waacking and other street dance styles. She is also the Director/Co-Founder of Mix'd Ingrdnts Dance Company, Director/Founder of all-girl Dance Company, Mini Mix'd and creator of Youth Dance & Nutrition Program, The GroovLings. Past work includes the following dance companies or projects, Amy O'Neil's Opposing Forces, Rennie Harris, RHAW, Embodiment Project, UCLA"s dance teams Samahang Modern and ACA, New Style Motherlode and Oakland Ballet.
LYDIA VIOLET is an Iranian-American multi-instrumentalist deeply inspired by folk, blues, gospel, and Iranian music traditions. With her four-piece live band she combines violin, banjo, stand-up bass, and rich 3-part harmonies to offer a soul-folk revival experience. In the past year she has collaborated with Rising Appalachia, Climbing PoeTree, Ayla Nereo, and the wonderful women of MaMuse. She has also studied closely with Deep Ecology elder and Buddhist scholar Joanna Macy for the past 9 years, learning how we can metabolize our pain for the world into resilience and communion with our human and more-than-human communities. She is committed to exploring music traditions that nourish legacy, courage, and resistance.
ARENAS DANCE COMPANY - AFROCUBAN FOLKLORE Founded and directed by Susana Arenas Pedroso in 2004, Arenas Dance Company’s mission is to preserve and promote the culturally-rooted and ever-evolving Cuban folkloric and popular dance traditions. Under Pedroso’s artist vision, the company has produced a string of acclaimed works that preserve tradition while embracing creative innovation and hybridity. These have been performed at venues such as Great American Music Hall, Palace of Fine Arts, Yerba Buena, and Herbst Theater; at educational institutions such as Chico State University, Laney College, and Stanford University; at cultural centers such as such as ODC Theater, La Peña, and Ashkenaz; and at celebrated festivals such as the Black Choreographers Festival, CubaCaribe Festival, SF Salsa/Rueda Festival, Yemanja Festival, and the Stanford Jazz Festival. Pedroso’s choreographic works include the celebrated Dos Aguas, presented at the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival in 2006 and Oya, presented the following year.
