Longtime favorite Asheba returns in our Global Cultures for Kids series. A veteran of several reggae bands, Asheba brings children and families into his joyful world of Caribbean music, especially calypso. Playing guitar and steel pans and singing, he performs an infectious mix of songs and tells stories from his island childhood in a participatory concert that appeals to children of all ages. And he includes his calypso versions of such favorites “Itsy Bitsy Spider” and “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” At some point everyone joins in the fun, singing and dancing along.
The effervescent musician moved from his native Trinidad to New York City in 1989. He has called Oakland home since 1999 and has put out four popular kids’ CDs: “Go Itsy, Music for Kids Caribbean Style,” “No More Monkeys,” “Children Are the Sunshine” and “In the Kid Zone.” Asheba is also featured on two Putumayo children’s collections, “Reggae Playground” and “Animal Playground.” And he can be heard in two songs recorded on our stage for the CD, “Live at Ashkenaz, Vol. 2: Kids!” Asheba says, “I strive to encourage hope and happiness in children of all ages, abilities and background, and enjoy creating an adult friendly approach to children's music through sweet rhythm and catchy melodies loved by both children and their parents.”
