Deeply rooted in the traditions of Afro-Cuban music, Feliciano Arango & Amistad Cubana hail from Havana. They play a mix of Cuban dance music from traditional son to the latest timba rhythms. The band’s leader and bass player Feliciano Arango has toured worldwide with top Cuban bands and the other members have equally impressive credentials. Feliciano was a member of the popular Cuban band NG La Banda during the early 1990s when he helped develop the timba style that combines Cuban pop music, funk and R&B, run through with folkloric styles. His propulsive bass innovations have been copied by many other musicians since then. Amistad Cubana continues to build on those styles.
Amistad Cubana features other members of the Arango family. The group features Cristina Arango on vocals and percussion. Eugenio comes from more than 20 years as percussionist with Cuban nueva trova singer Pablo Milanés. Guitarist Ignacio is a veteran from the Tropicana Club in Cuba where he played with such masters as Giraldo Piloto and Paquito D’Rivera. The band’s songs range from Cuban son to timba, all written or re-arranged by Feliciano. Its latest album is “Llego la Amistad,” issued in 2016. On the side, Feliciano is a busy music teacher and wrote a book about timba called “El bajo contemporáneo de laTimba Cubana.”
