David Nelson’s rock band teams with Leftover Salmon’s Vince Herman, and tonight they welcome opening singer Christina “Sweet Beets” Boyden & the Kind Hearted for a dance-oriented mix of Nelson-Salmon-Dead-psychedelic songs and jams.
Conceived last November as a band to have some fun while David Nelson heals his shoulder, singer-guitarist-mandolinist Vince Herman from Leftover Salmon (and Great American Taxi) once again joins Nelson Band members, who have played together the past 22 years as well as serving time in an array of great rock bands: Barry Sless (lead guitar and pedal steel), Pete Sears (bass), John Molo (drums) and Mookie Siegel (keyboards) to perform songs from the David Nelson Band repertoire (including originals penned by Nelson and Dead lyricist Robert Hunter), as well as Herman’s extensive catalog of songs. They toss in some classic rock covers, as in Dead, Dylan etc. It’s a great mix of tight arrangements and more than a little jamming for a full night of rocking and dancing.
Singer-songwriter Christina “Sweet Beets” Boyden & the Kind Hearted open the evening with a short set of her songs. Boyden’s musical journey led her from being a Los Angeles DJ to writing her own songs influenced by her current home, Hawaii. Her debut album, "Sweet Aloha," was produced by Barry Sless, and the album’s musicians (the Kind Hearted) are the Nelson band (Sless, Siegel, Sears and Molo), who accompany her on record and tonight onstage. https://www.sweetbeetsmusic.com
