Grammy Award-winning Jamaican reggae singer Mykal Rose brings his hits and new conscious songs to Ashkenaz. Known not only for his own music but also as a former member of chart-topping trio Black Uhuru, Rose is one of the greats from the golden age of classic reggae. His vocal style that includes rhythm scat-singing has been imitated by many other singers. In addition to his array of songs from the past three decades, he will feature songs from his latest album, “Crucial World.”
Rose grew up in Kingston, singing with a who’s who of musicians from Dennis Brown to the Wailers, as well as Sly and Robbie, who have produced many of his hits. He joined Black Uhuru in 1977, and in 1985 the group’s “Anthem” album became the first recording to receive a Grammy Award for reggae. Soon thereafter he left the group and started a coffee farm in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica. In the ’90s, produced by Sly and Robbie, he issued a long string of recordings including “Live at Maritime Hall” (San Francisco, 2002). In 2004 he reunited with Black Uhuru and has toured with them on occasion while maintaining his solo career.
With original music filled with spiritual insights and teachings, Oakland’s Reggae Angels spend most of their time on the road spreading the message. Launched in 1992 by Fenton Wardle (he and Cynthia Roots are the lead vocalists), the Reggae Angels quickly gained a reputation as both the best backing band and leaders on their own. In addition to their own tours, the Reggae Angels have done a 50-city U.S. tour with Andrew Tosh and toured with and backed a who’s who of top names in reggae (Sugar Minott, Big Youth, the Abyssinians, Frankie Paul, Everton Blender, and Don Carlos, to name a few), in North and South America and Hawaii. The Reggae Angels are well-known not just for their dynamic rhythmic grooves, but also for their universal message of guidance and inspiration, with lyrics affirming wisdom, generosity, and gratitude. The Reggae Angels have their own recording studio in Oakland called The Workshop, where they help produce other artists as well as their own works.
