Two newer bands – Solate and Cool Saturday -- make their Ashkenaz debut with fresh sounds from folk to rock. Solate is a soulful indie-folk group formed by guitarist-composer Joel Mandella and singer-songwriter Maya Vilaplana, with bassist Kevin Goldberg and singer Marissa Bergmann. Solate fuses rhythmic jazz guitar playing and melodic lyrics written around questions of love and ideals, and tonight mixes its best original songs with some classy covers. Solate’s bicoastal founders Vilaplana (from Berkeley) and Mandella (a New Yorker) met in the middle, at Minnesota’s Macalester College, bonding over shared musical influences that they worked into their early shows, songs by Melody Gardot, Jose Gonzalez, and Regina Spektor, then evolved into writing original compositions.
Folk-rock-funk duo Cool Saturday makes its stage debut tonight. The group features two members of Oakland’s Lil' Elephant: guitarist-singer Adam Hughes and bassist-singer Kevin Goldberg. They met in Santa Cruz in 2008, when the two bonded over an original song: "Imagination Meets Fire." Over the last decade, Hughes and Goldberg have joined forces in a number of ensembles spanning multiple genres. Offbeat lyrics, heart-warming vocal harmonies, melodic improvisational stints, and the occasional dissonant shredfest make Saturday Cool a one-of-a-kind project.
