Bayat Music Ensemble and the Salimpour School present “The Road to Aleppo” – a concert and benefit for the Syrian Children’s Relief Fund, a project of Save the Children.
Directed by award-winning violinist and composer Fathi al-Jarrah, the Bayat Music Ensemble presents a program of classical music from Aleppo, Syria. Aleppo was once the center of Arabic music and poetry, with a rich tradition dating back hundreds of years. Special dance performance by the Suhaila Dance Company.
Founded in 1996 and under the artistic direction of Suhaila Salimpour, The Suhaila Dance Company is comprised of some of the most highly trained dancers in belly dance. It performs across the country in various styles of traditional and fusion belly dance. Salimpour is an acclaimed performer, teacher, and choreographer of belly dance. Schooled from an early age in jazz, tap, and ballet, she began integrating her extensive classical training with the styles passed on by her mother, Jamila Salimpour, who helped popularize Middle Eastern dance in the United States. The result was an artistic breakthrough that takes belly dance to a new level. Salimpour runs her acclaimed belly dance school based in Berkeley, and in addition to her own solo show of belly dance she has appeared in numerous stage productions in the United States and Europe, as well as creating instructional videos.
